About Us
Central Parkway Eye Care Center started in Newark New Jersey in the early 1960's when Dr. Robert M. Cunningham, Sr. came back to New Jersey from Howard Medical School to practice Eyes, Ears, Nose and throat. The state of New Jersey then decided that the physicians need to determine which area they were going to primarily focus on being either, Eyes only (Ophthalmology) or ENT. (Otolaryngology) So Dr. Cunningham Sr. chose Ophthalmology. When Dr. Cunningham, Sr. did this, he became the first African American Ophthalmologist in New Jersey. In 1973, he then joined with several African American physicians to design and build what is now Central Parkway Associates at 185 Central Ave in East Orange New Jersey. The purpose of this was to give the African American community access to many different doctors all under one roof. They kept management of the building until 2004 when it was then sold. There are still many physicians of color that remain in the building to this day, including second generation Robert D. Cunningham, Jr.
